John Schoolman and Jon Kay I know it has been a while since I made a podcast post. I thought I would share a 7-minute piece/talk I gave as part of the American Folklore Society Meeting in New Orleans this past fall.  I focus on the work of John Schoolman, a friend of mine who made beautiful walking sticks and canes. The aim of the presentation is to show how handmade objects can serve as tools for life review for the elderly as well as an amplifier for beliefs and values among the very old. Since I gave this at the AFS Meeting, it also stresses my belief that more folklorists should be paying attention to these specific forms of material culture, and the stories they help communicate. I hope you enjoy it.
